Thesis subject: Genesis of the Zarshuran Gold Deposit, NW Iran.

            As-Sb-Hg-Au-Tl mineralisation at the Zarshuran occurs on the flank of an inlier of Precambrian rocks in black silty carbonaceous and calcareous shale. In this study detailed geologic, petrographic, mineralogic, fluid inclusion analysis, geochemical studies of host rocks and mineralised zone, geochronology of mineralisation and volcanic activities in the area, were conducted to characterise the hydrothermal fluid(s), the environment and processes of ore deposition, the driving energy for hydrothermal system and relationship between mineralisation and magmatism. The association of As and S were modelled by thermodynamic calculations to predict the sulphur speciation, arsenic mineral stability, effects of pH, fO2, P, T, ·S on As and Au solubility and coprecipitation mechanism at temperature and pressure of the mineralisation. The combination of the geological, geochemical, fluid inclusion and modelling results have made it possible to assemble a genetic model for the mineralisation at Zarshuran which may be applicable to other such deposits.

            During my PhD, in addition to field work and sampling, I gained experience of many different techniques: SEM, EMP, XRD, XRF, microthermometry, laser Raman spectroscopy, crush-leach, geochronology (K/Ar and Ar/Ar), stable isotopes (δ13C), organic carbon (flash combusting gas chromatography and Rock Eval methods) and carbonate carbon measurements (McCrea method) gas chromatography and using different computer software and drawing packages.

Thesis subject: Mineralogy and Genesis of Pb/Zn Kushk deposit.

            The Kushk Pb-Zn deposit in Central Iran, occurs in a black shale in volcanic and sedimentary sequence of late Precambrian. In this study petrographic, mineralogic and geochemical studies of host, mineralised and igneous rocks were carried out in order to establish the paragenetic sequence, relationship between mineralisation and tectono-magmatic activity and environment of mineralisation. The obtained data indicated that the Kushk deposit is a stratiform syngenetic mineralisation, formed during submarine volcanism and sedimentation (distal exhalative type). From the tectono-magmatic point of view it is related to advance stage of continental rifting.

            My master involved course work and research, major on sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic ore deposits, geochemical and geophysical exploration, economy and management in mines, estimation and evaluation of ore deposits, and two years work on thesis.

            Gaining experience on core logging, ore microscopy, chemical analysis of ores and silicate rocks, and mineralogic techniques.
